 Oklahoma School for the Deaf

   

Oklahoma School for the Deaf was first established as a part of a private school for the blind at Fort Gibson in 1897.  The Territorial School for the Deaf was founded in Guthrie in 1898.  The school was moved to Sulphur in 1908.  In 1982 the school was legislatively designated as a statewide resource center for the needs of deaf children and school districts across the state.

The academic program is accredited by the Oklahoma Department of Education and the vocational program by the Department of Vocation and Technical Training Education.  OSD also is accredited by the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf, Inc. and North Central Accreditation.

Three universities and one Oklahoma community college cooperate to serve thousands of Southern Oklahoma students with college and university classes and degrees.  The University and College Center of Ardmore, known as the Ardmore Higher Education Center, delivers classes from East Central University (Ada), Murray State College (Tishomingo), and Southeastern Oklahoma State University (Durant).  Freshmen through graduate classes are taught and students can earn an associate, bachelor, or master's degree through one of the three participating institutions.

As a two-year institution founded in 1908, Murray State College is here to serve you, to assist you by providing avenues for self-fulfillment and self-advancement.  Murray State has quality educational offerings in both two-year associate of applied science degree programs and in two-year transfer associate in arts and associate in science degree programs.  Being a small two-year college, Murray State can provide you with "hands on" learning experiences, one-to-one interaction with instructors and staff, and an atmosphere where the student is a person, not just an enrollment number.

East Central is a member institution of the Oklahoma System of Higher Education.  The Board of Regents of Oklahoma Colleges is the governing body.

East Central University offers thirty-two baccalaureate degrees, seven master's degrees and a number of certification programs.  Although over 4400 students attend ECU, class sizes are small, allowing faculty to devote their attention to each and every student.  Quality teaching and concern for student learning are ever most at the forefront of faculty interests and pursuits.  This is a university committed to students.

Training for jobs in technical and trade vocations is available through the Southern Oklahoma Technology center.  More than 70 courses provide the chance to train in fields as diverse as nursing, electronics, auto mechanics, culinary arts, business, carpentry and cosmetology.  There is not tuition charge to full-time students who reside in the district.  Tuition for part-time adult courses is moderately priced.
